International Living Postcards--your daily escape

Managua, Nicaragua

In Managua there exists an attitude I call "energetic optimism," as new businesses open and grow. New construction is everywhere you look, from small homes to large commercial centers.

The newest commercial center in Managua, Galerias Santa Domingo, opened two years ago and has added a new wing in the last five months, and has plans to add a convention center and hotel this year.

Colonial cities Granada and Leon are receiving face lifts as they undergo restoration, house by house.

Nicaragua today is bustling, growing in leaps and bounds…yet remains the same warm, friendly county I came to love when I first moved here with my family.

In the last 10 years, growing numbers of tourists have discovered in Nicaragua a destination with a high level of safety (safest in Central American) and a low cost of living, as well as world-class surfing, beautiful beaches, and rich culture.

This is a country of poets such as Ruben Dario, Pablo Antonio Cuadra, and Gioconda Belli…of music, from rancheras to salsa…of dance, from ballet to folkloric and miskito dancing. The Ruben Dario Theater hosts major cultural events from all over the world.

It is a beautiful land of lakes, volcanoes, coasts, bird watching, and nature reserves such as Mombacho Volcano or "Finca Esperanza Verde."

In 1997 my husband and I made a huge decision: to move to Nicaragua with our three children (a 5-, 7-, and 14-year-old). That decision has paid off handsomely. I can't wait for the next 10 years.
