On The Grapevine

Paris, France
September 21, 2007

Despite the higher than average rainfall in much of France this summer, the grape harvests are going ahead at least two weeks earlier than usual. Champagne grapes were even being picked almost mid-August, the earliest ever, in the northeast and in the south, in Rivesaltes, some crops were being gathered as early as August 2.

The exceptionally gentle winter and the hot months before June all contributed to the precocious ripening of the fruit, and although crops will be smaller than previous years, this year's wine is anticipated to be good, if not excellent. Table wine production is expected to be almost a quarter less than last year-many producers were hit hard (literally) by severe hailstorms in the spring. This might signal a price increase in vins de table in the near future.

In Italy as well, grapes have been harvested almost a month earlier than normal, without any bad weather to ruin the crops. The lower yield, although of better quality, is expected to slow down the wine boom that the country has been enjoying. In 2006 the wine industry turnover reached a record 9.6 billion euro, which includes 3.2 billion euro earned from exports. Time to stock up on your favorite bottles before the prices go up.
