Stretch your Dollars in the Land of the Sun

Read more about Ecuador in International Living Postcards--your daily escape

Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007
Cotacachi, Ecuador

In just a few years, 60 million U.S. baby boomers will start their retirement. Many pensions and social security payments will be severely squeezed by inflation, leaving people without savings in an uncomfortable position. If you are in this situation and choose to stay in the U.S., here are the only options that I can see:

1. Keep working.
2. Move to less expensive areas within the U.S.
3. Live in poverty.
4. Die. (Harsh, but a strong possibility.)

We boomers are the most spoiled group of consumers (as a demographic class) that has ever existed on earth. We were promised the world. We were given the world.  Now the magic is about to disappear…

But the land of sun (Ecuador) can bring it all back with its blue cliffs pointed far into the sea, empty beaches, and lush tropics. My wife Merri and I love spending winters in Ecuador, mainly due to the low cost lifestyle and real estate opportunities. Not to mention the ideal location--Ecuador is just four hours from the States.

If Ecuador gets just 10% of the 6 million Americans that will leave the U.S., imagine how this will affect a nation of 11 million. Besides the 5% increase in population, this increases the entire national GDP by almost 20%. This is one reason why Merri and I are buying more and more real estate in the country.

When we first visited this Andean nation 13 years ago we never imagined we would set up a life here. Working as newsletter writers and publishers for nearly thirty years--specializing in the international aspect of investing, I was continually looking for new places to invest. A totally new adventure began when I spotted business and investment opportunities here.

We bought a hacienda with over 800 acres and El Meson de Las Flores, a 180-year-old garden inn. Then we started a business offering seminars on real estate, business, and investing in Ecuador and South America. I figured this would help readers (and of course myself) to make a small fortune.

Our Ecuadorian journey has changed our entire way of life, in both health and wealth. We have profited from investments in bonds that paid 72% per annum, real estate as inexpensive as $5,000 for beachfront lots, plus learned health secrets that will help us live longer as well as happier, pain free lives.

We hope to see you someday soon enjoying the sweet life in Ecuador, land of the sun.
