Buenos Aires Lives--Tango in Argentina "That gust, the tango, that mischief
fighting on a suburban corner." - Jorge Luis Borges
Monday, May 28, 2007 Buenos Aires, Argentina Tango classes (for amateurs and professionals) and shows are held everywhere in B.A.--from hostels to cultural centers and restaurants
and, of course, at the milongas (tango dance halls). Visitors come from all over the world to learn the Argentine Tango. Tours and private lessons are available at Academia Nacional del Tango. But I'm staying at a tango hotel, Mansion Dandi Royal and my patient teachers, Ernesto and Stella, are well-known Tango professionals. They arrive every morning and we dance for two or three hours. In the evening, we attend tango shows and private milongas. (Milonga is also a combination of music and dance, similar to tango but with a march-like rhythm). On Sundays, we visit the antiques market in San Telmo and enjoy performances in the square by tango dancers and mime artists. The best and most outrageous show in town is Senor Tango. Using horses in the performance, it rivals any Las Vegas act. You can see free shows all over the city as the tango is danced on the streets on weekends. For a different beat, go to Asia de Cuba. Try not to let the women dressed in tiny leather outfits dancing on stage distract you from the eclectic mix of music. This is one of Buenos Aires' most popular clubs in Puerto Madero. Apart from the sultry tango shows, Buenos Aires has dozens of venues with first-rate theater productions, contemporary movies, and raging disco clubs. When it comes to great dancing, fine food, fun, and fabulous night life
this is the city to come to. Vive Buenos Aires, mis amigos
